How hours and overtime are calculated

daily hours = (end − start − unpaid break) ÷ 60 (end before start = overnight shift)
total hours = sum of daily hours
overtime      = max(0, total − 40);  regular = total − overtime
gross pay     = regular × rate + overtime × rate × 1.5

The 40-hour weekly threshold and 1.5× premium are the federal FLSA minimums for non-exempt employees. Daily overtime rules in some states, double-time, and shift differentials are not included; gross pay here is before any taxes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked from a time card?

Subtract the start time from the end time for each day, subtract unpaid breaks, and add the days together. 9:00 to 17:00 with a 30-minute lunch is 7.5 hours; five such days are 37.5 hours.

When does overtime start?

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states (California, Alaska, Nevada, Colorado) also require daily overtime after 8 hours, which this calculator does not model.

Are breaks paid?

Federal law does not require meal breaks; when they are given, bona fide meal periods of 30 minutes or more are usually unpaid, while short rest breaks of 5 to 20 minutes must be paid. Enter only unpaid break minutes above.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide minutes by 60: 45 minutes is 0.75 hours, 20 minutes is 0.33. Payroll systems use decimal hours, which is why the calculator shows both formats.

Does this handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time the shift is treated as crossing midnight, so 22:00 to 06:00 counts as 8 hours.
