Federal withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T for a 2020-or-later W-4. Social Security applies to the first $184,500 of wages in 2026. California tax uses the 2026 rate schedule (top rate 13.3%).
How California paycheck taxes work in 2026
California uses a graduated schedule with 10 brackets from 1% to 13.3%. The top rate applies to taxable income above $1,000,000 for single filers and $1,485,906 for joint filers. Only the income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, which is why the effective rate on your whole paycheck is lower than the top rate.
Before the rates apply, California allows a standard deduction of $5,540 for single filers and $11,080 for joint filers and personal exemption credits of $153 per filer and $153 per dependent. The calculator applies these automatically based on your filing status and the dependents you enter.
| Rate | Single filers | Married filing jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 1% | $0 – $11,079 | $0 – $22,158 |
| 2% | $11,079 – $26,264 | $22,158 – $52,528 |
| 4% | $26,264 – $41,452 | $52,528 – $82,904 |
| 6% | $41,452 – $57,542 | $82,904 – $115,084 |
| 8% | $57,542 – $72,724 | $115,084 – $145,448 |
| 9.3% | $72,724 – $371,479 | $145,448 – $742,958 |
| 10.3% | $371,479 – $445,771 | $742,958 – $891,542 |
| 11.3% | $445,771 – $742,953 | $891,542 – $1,000,000 |
| 12.3% | $742,953 – $1,000,000 | $1,000,000 – $1,485,906 |
| 13.3% | over $1,000,000 | over $1,485,906 |
Standard deduction: $5,540 single, $11,080 joint. Personal exemption credit: $153 per filer, $153 per dependent. Married filing separately and head of household use the single schedule in this estimate.
State payroll deductions
Beyond income tax, California employees pay into state programs that appear as separate lines on a pay stub: California SDI (State Disability Insurance) at 1.3% of all wages. These are included in the estimate.
Good to know. California rates include the 1% Mental Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1 million. Standard deduction and exemption credits use Tax Foundation's inflation-adjusted 2026 figures; the FTB publishes final 2026 amounts each fall.

A single filer earning $60,000 a year, paid every two weeks, with a standard W-4 and no pre-tax deductions, sees this on each paycheck in 2026. These numbers are produced by the same engine as the calculator above, so they never drift from the tool.

How do I calculate my hourly take-home pay in California?
Switch the calculator to Hourly, enter your rate, hours per week and any overtime, and choose how often you are paid. The California hourly paycheck calculator opens with those settings and shows the same federal, FICA and state breakdown.
Why is my actual paycheck different from this estimate?
Employers use IRS Publication 15-T and the state's own withholding tables, and your year-to-date wages, benefits, bonuses, garnishments and any local taxes change the numbers. This estimate annualises your regular pay; it will be closest for a steady salary with a standard W-4.
