Federal taxes on every paycheck in 2026
Federal income tax withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T: your pay is annualised, adjusted for the entries on your Form W-4, reduced by the standard deduction built into the withholding tables ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household), and run through the 2026 rate schedule below. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500; Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate take-home pay?
Start with gross pay for the period, subtract pre-tax deductions (401(k), health premiums, HSA), then federal income tax withholding under IRS Publication 15-T, Social Security at 6.2% and Medicare at 1.45%, then state and local income tax and any state payroll programs, then after-tax deductions. What is left is your net or take-home pay.
What percentage of my paycheck is withheld for taxes in 2026?
For most employees between 20% and 35%. Social Security and Medicare take a flat 7.65%, federal withholding runs from 0% to 37% at the margin (typically 8% to 15% of gross for middle incomes after the $16,100 standard deduction), and state income tax adds 0% in nine states up to roughly 9% in the highest-tax states.
Why is the federal tax on my paycheck different from my tax bracket?
Your bracket is the rate on your last dollar. Withholding spreads the standard deduction and the lower brackets across the year, so the average rate taken from each check is lower than your marginal rate. The calculator shows both.
Which states have no income tax?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming do not tax wages. Washington has no wage tax but does collect Paid Family and Medical Leave and WA Cares premiums from employees.
Does the calculator handle hourly pay and overtime?
Yes. Switch to Hourly, enter your rate, regular hours and overtime hours (paid at 1.5×), and pick your pay frequency. Every state also has a dedicated hourly page.
Is this calculator accurate?
It reproduces the 2026 IRS withholding tables exactly and uses each state's published 2026 rates, deductions and exemptions. Your pay stub can still differ because of local taxes, benefits, year-to-date wages and your employer's rounding. See how we calculate for the full method and sources.
