Indiana Paycheck Calculator
Estimate Indiana take-home pay with your WH-4 exemptions and all 92 county rates. January 1 residence or principal workplace determines the county used for withholding.
Indiana payroll withholding. The state income-tax line uses Indiana DN #1 and your WH-4 elections for regular pay. The annual amount projects those paycheck estimates over a year; it does not calculate your final state tax bill.
Annual and monthly figures assume the entered pay repeats for a full year. Wage caps are averaged across those paychecks; year-to-date pay and deductions are not tracked.
| Line | Per paycheck | Full-year projection |
|---|---|---|
| Gross pay | $2,307.69 | $60,000.00 |
| Pre-tax retirement | $0.00 | $0.00 |
| Health, HSA, FSA (pre-tax) | $0.00 | $0.00 |
| Federal income-tax withholding | $193.08 | $5,020.00 |
| Social Security (6.2%) | $143.08 | $3,720.00 |
| Medicare (1.45%) | $33.46 | $870.00 |
| Indiana withholding | $68.08 | $1,770.08 |
| Local income tax | $46.62 | $1,212.12 |
| After-tax deductions | $0.00 | $0.00 |
| Take-home pay | $1,823.38 | $47,407.80 |
Estimated tax share is the displayed federal withholding, FICA, state/local tax estimate and state payroll deductions divided by gross pay. Benefit deductions are excluded from that share; it is not your final income-tax rate.
Federal withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T for a 2020-or-later W-4. Social Security applies to the first $184,500 of wages in 2026.
Compare a Indiana salary offer with your paystub
- Enter annual gross salary and the employer's pay frequency. Every two weeks means 26 paychecks; twice a month means 24. Benefits entered per paycheck follow that choice.
- Copy the elections from your current federal W-4 and the separate state certificate fields shown in the form. A job offer's salary alone does not establish withholding.
- Enter your employee retirement and health deductions, then any after-tax deductions. Compare gross pay and each deduction line with a regular paystub before relying on the net estimate.
- For a proposed raise, run both annual salaries with the same elections, pay frequency and benefit settings. Percentage-based retirement deductions change with salary. Keep one-off bonuses separate from regular annual salary.
A raise starting partway through the year affects fewer paychecks. The annual result here is a full year at the entered salary; it does not combine earlier wages or predict a refund. For household withholding and amounts already paid, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.
How Indiana paycheck taxes work in 2026
Indiana’s 2026 regular-pay method uses 2.95% state withholding plus the applicable county rate. WH-4 line 5 personal exemptions are worth $1,000 each annually; line 6 additional dependents and line 7 first-time children are each worth $1,500; line 8 adopted children are worth $3,000. Enter each certificate count separately.
For each WH-4 line, divide its annual exemption total by the number of paychecks and round that deduction constant to cents. Add the four constants, subtract them from taxable pay, and apply the state and county rates separately. The first-time and regular dependent counts use separate rounded constants even though both have a $1,500 annual value. Extra state and county dollars are added to their respective lines.
| Rate | Single filers and joint filers |
|---|---|
| 2.95% | over $0 |
Personal exemption: $1,000 per filer, $1,000 per dependent. Married filing separately and head of household use the single schedule in this estimate.
Local income taxes in Indiana
Use your Indiana county of residence on January 1. If you lived outside Indiana, use your principal Indiana work county on January 1. If both were outside Indiana, no county withholding is calculated. This tool uses the January 1, 2026 rate schedule and defaults to Marion County as an example.
Good to know. Indiana withholding uses the WH-4 line 5, 6, 7 and 8 counts separately. Each line's deduction constant is rounded to cents before the four are added. The remaining taxable pay is used for both the 2.95% state tax and the selected county tax. Both January 1 county selectors default to Marion County for the example. Indiana residence takes priority over workplace. Moving later in the year does not change the January 1 county selection; county rates can change in January and October. An existing qualifying WH-47 certificate removes state withholding only; county withholding can remain. WH-4MIL removes both Indiana state and county withholding. Federal W-4 exemption does not remove Indiana withholding. Home-state withholding is not added automatically. Counts default to zero; enter the values from your current certificate. Eligibility, nonresident-alien limits, interstate wage allocation, WH-4AFF temporary waivers, catch-up withholding and separately paid bonuses are outside this regular-pay estimate. Annual results project the selected current rules across steady paychecks.
Worked example: $60,000 salary in Indiana
A single filer earning $60,000 a year, paid every two weeks, with a standard W-4 and no pre-tax deductions, zero WH-4 exemption counts, Marion County residence on January 1, no certificate exemption and no extra state or county withholding, sees this estimate for each paycheck in 2026. These numbers are produced by the same engine as the calculator above, so they never drift from the tool.

Indiana WH-4 example: state and county withholding
Departmental Notice #1 gives an $800 weekly example with five personal exemptions, three additional dependents, one first-time child and two adopted children. It uses a 1% county rate, which can be reproduced here by selecting Harrison County.
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Personal deduction | $96.15 |
| Additional dependent deduction | $86.54 |
| First-time deduction | $28.85 |
| Adopted-child deduction | $115.38 |
| Total deductions | $326.92 |
| Taxable weekly pay | $473.08 |
| Indiana state withholding | $13.96 |
| County withholding at 1% | $4.73 |
Your county follows January 1 residence, or principal workplace if residence was outside Indiana. The state and county use the same adjusted wage amount, but each tax and extra-withholding amount is calculated separately.
Use the actual counts on your WH-4 certificate. The first-time and adopted-child counts refer to children already on line 6 and can overlap. Personal exemptions on line 5 include the dependents listed earlier in the form. Eligibility and special nonresident rules need separate review.
The WH-47 reciprocal-state certificate covers qualifying residents of Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Those calculators provide separate state estimates; home-state withholding is not included in the Indiana result.

Federal taxes on every paycheck in 2026
Federal income tax withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T: your pay is annualised, adjusted for the entries on your Form W-4, reduced by the standard deduction built into the withholding tables ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household), and run through the 2026 rate schedule below. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500; Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000.

Frequently asked questions
Does Indiana have state income tax?
Yes. Indiana has a flat income-tax rate of 2.95% for 2026. The state income-tax line uses Indiana DN #1 and your WH-4 elections for regular pay. The annual amount projects those paycheck estimates over a year; it does not calculate your final state tax bill.
How much is taken out of a $1,000 paycheck in Indiana?
For a single filer paid $1,000 a week with no pre-tax deductions, zero WH-4 exemption counts, Marion County residence on January 1, no certificate exemption and no extra state or county withholding, this 2026 calculator estimates $204.28 in tax and state-program deductions: $78.08 federal withholding, $62.00 Social Security, $14.50 Medicare, $29.50 Indiana withholding, $20.20 local tax, leaving estimated take-home pay of $795.72. This assumes the same pay and elections throughout the year.
Which Indiana county rate should my paycheck use?
Use your Indiana county of residence on January 1. If you lived outside Indiana then, use your principal Indiana work county on January 1. If both were outside Indiana, no county withholding is calculated. A later move does not change that year’s county selection. County rates themselves can change in January and October; this tool states the rate schedule it uses.
Does Indiana have local income taxes?
Use your Indiana county of residence on January 1. If you lived outside Indiana, use your principal Indiana work county on January 1. If both were outside Indiana, no county withholding is calculated. This tool uses the January 1, 2026 rate schedule and defaults to Marion County as an example. Enter the rate in the calculator's "County income tax" field to include it.
Do WH-4 exemptions reduce both Indiana state and county withholding?
Yes. The personal, additional dependent, first-time and adopted-child deduction constants are subtracted before both rates are applied. Copy the counts from WH-4 lines 5–8. Lines 7 and 8 are subsets of the children on line 6; those categories can overlap. The calculator checks count consistency but does not determine eligibility.
Does a reciprocal-state certificate remove Indiana county tax?
A qualifying WH-47 certificate removes Indiana state withholding, but applicable county tax remains. A qualifying WH-4MIL certificate removes both Indiana state and county withholding. Federal exemption alone does not remove either Indiana tax. Use an existing valid certificate; home-state withholding is not added automatically.
Does this cover Indiana’s 30-day nonresident waiver?
No. Temporary WH-4AFF waivers, aggregate working-day counts, interstate wage allocation and catch-up withholding need separate treatment. This calculator estimates regular pay with the selected current elections and projects those paychecks over a year. It does not reconstruct changing eligibility or earlier withholding.
Are 401(k) contributions taxed in Indiana?
Qualifying traditional 401(k), 403(b) and similar pre-tax retirement contributions reduce federal and Indiana income-tax wages in this estimate. Social Security and Medicare still apply to those contributions; any local-tax or state-program wage rules are separate.
How do I calculate my hourly take-home pay in Indiana?
Switch the calculator to Hourly, enter your rate, hours per week and any overtime, and choose how often you are paid. The Indiana hourly paycheck calculator opens with those settings and shows the same federal, FICA and state breakdown.
Why is my actual paycheck different from this estimate?
The state income-tax line uses Indiana DN #1 and your WH-4 elections for regular pay. The annual amount projects those paycheck estimates over a year; it does not calculate your final state tax bill. The estimate assumes steady regular pay and the elections and deductions you enter. Employer rounding, variable pay, year-to-date wage caps, benefit coverage and local-tax rules can produce different deductions. Compare gross pay and each deduction line with your paystub before using the net figure for budgeting. It does not predict a refund or balance due.
